BYU basketball: Former Cougar Brandon Davies signs with the L.A. Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers announced Thursday that former BYU forward Brandon Davies has signed a contract to play professionally for the team.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We really liked Brandon in summer league,” Clippers head coach Doc Rivers said. “We like his ability to play multiple positions and he fits with our team. He understands team basketball and has been in here all summer working on his game.”
Davies was not selected in the 2013 NBA draft but immediately came to an agreement with the team once the draft ended.
"I can definitely use that as fuel," Davies told Clippers.com, "seeing some guys that got drafted that I feel like I can probably be better than, whether that’s now or in the long run. I just know myself. I know I’m going to work every day and try to get better every day.”
Davies played for the Clippers during the 2013 NBA Summer League. Over the five games he played, he averaged 5.8 points and 4 rebounds in 15.8 minutes of play.
His best game came in a losing effort to the New York Knicks in July. In that game, the only summer league game Davies started, he scored 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting. He also scored a 3-pointer in that game.
"I loved his performance. He plays hard every possession. He does the right things on both ends of the floor. He got a chance to play a lot more tonight to see what he can do," Clippers summer league coach Tyronn Lue told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "His effort and the way he makes plays is unbelievable. He did a great job for us."
According to a clippers.com report, Davies followed up his summer league success by working out daily with Clippers starting forward Blake Griffin and playing pickup basketball with the likes of Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and Metta World Peace.
As a member of the BYU basketball team, Davies averaged 12.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists for his 24.1 minutes of playing time per game. As a senior, Davies was a focal point of the offense. He averaged 17.7 points, 8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and one block, starting every game.
BYU head basketball coach Dave Rose told clippers.com he wasn't sure what would happen to Davies in the NBA but that he feels everything worked out for the best.
“It’s hard to explain what I thought would happen with Brandon (in the draft),” Rose told the site. “The feedback was that everyone liked him but didn’t know how he would be used. After the draft was over everyone was sort of looking around and we were surprised, but he got a call from his agent and it worked out with the Clippers. Sometimes that helps. You get in where a team really wants you.”
BYU fans will have an opportunity to see Davies play in Salt Lake City twice during the upcoming NBA season. The Utah Jazz will host the Clippers in preseason action on Oct. 12, 2013, and in regular season play on March 14, 2014.
Utah also will play the Clippers twice in Los Angeles this season, first on Dec. 28, 2013 and second on Feb. 1, 2014.
