The struggle for work-life balance among working men and women has taken center stage recently, with major studies by The American Psychology Association and other prominent research institutes showing that time at home with the kids is a major concern of both sexes.
The Deseret News’ own Devon Merling reported last week on the struggles of many fathers to find a balance between maintaining successful careers that provide well for their families, and giving their wives and children the attention these fathers feel they deserve.
“Only half of working fathers say they spend enough time with their kids,” Merling wrote, citing a study by the Pew Research Center.
“Even though fathers are clearly interested in being more involved in their children’s lives,” she continued, “the way to make that happen is still being negotiated.”
One luxury many working mothers and fathers don’t have is company selection. As Forbes reported last year, only 19 percent of Americans are satisfied with their jobs, but most don’t feel they have the freedom to change.
But the company you work for can make all the difference, particularly when it comes to work-life balance. Though the exact number of job swaps isn’t known, it is clear that many adults tend to change careers more than once in their lifetime.
So if you want a better work-life balance when you change careers, what factors should you consider?
A new study by the company ratings site glassdoor.com — think of it as a ratemyprofessor.com for corporations — ranks companies based on the work-life satisfaction of their employees. The ratings of each company are derived from reviews from either current or former employees of the company.
Several trends emerge from this rating system. For example, companies that allow more flexible hours, such as tech and online-based corporations, have the strongest representation on the list.
Though the list includes international corporations, most of the highest-rated companies are headquartered in the United States.
There is one important thing to keep in mind while considering the list: Because the company review system rates each business not only by the scores given by various employees but by the number of reviews received on the site, the list is weighted heavily toward large Fortune 500 companies; in this respect, many of the potential jobs listed are incredibly competitive.
