UVU track: Wolverines sweep outdoor track and field athlete of the year awards
NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Utah Valley University's Michael McPherson and Maryn Pincock have been named the 2013 Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches. The awards were announced Monday by the conference office.
McPherson, a sophomore from Parker, Colo., won the men's honor after an outstanding outdoor season that propelled him to be an NCAA Qualifier in the long jump and 200m, placing 31st in the long jump (23-09) and 44th in the 200m (21.82) at the NCAA West Preliminaries. He was named the Male Outstanding Athlete at the GWC Outdoor Championships in early May and also took home Best Performance of the Meet recognition after he won the long jump (24-07), high jump (6-01.25) and 4x100m relay (41.72), while taking second in the 4x400m relay (3:17.51), third in the 110m hurdles (15.09), fourth in the 200m (22.19) and javelin (151-10), and seventh in the 100m (10.98). With his outstanding meet, McPherson helped the Wolverines to their fifth-straight GWC outdoor title. In addition, he also won the Decathlon in mid-April at the Mt. SAC Relays with a career-best 6,973 points.
The women's award went to Pincock who was a repeat champion in the discus (49.64m) and shot put (13.90m) at the GWC Outdoor Championships, which the UVU women also won for the fifth consecutive year. The senior from Boise, Idaho, was a two-time NCAA Qualifier in the discus and placed 38th at the NCAA Prelims with a toss of 47.39m. In addition to her double gold at the GWC Championships, Pincock also placed fifth in the hammer throw (44.24m). She qualified for the NCAAs in the discus at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Qualifier in May as she won the event with a school record and GWC-best throw of 50.12m.
Other athletes nominated for the Athlete of the Year honors were CSU Bakersfield's Thomas Judge and Jamara Scott, Houston Baptist's Matt Perri and Jessica Whitt, and Texas-Pan American's Andy Lopez and Judith Chumba.
The Wolverines, who have just finished their final season of competition in the Great West, officially join the Western Athletic Conference in all sports other than wrestling (Western Wrestling Conference) on July 1.
