Two castaways were voted out during Wednesday night’s episode of “Survivor: Caramoan — Fans vs. Favorites” and South Jordan adoptive mother of six and Brigham Young University English professor Dawn Meehan was part of a bold move and is still fighting for the $1 million prize.
There were two Immunity Challenges and two Tribal Councils on days 31-33 of the 39-day competition. There were five Favorites, or returning players, and three Fans competing to be part of the final three.
“This is the longest I’ve been in the game. To be this close makes me feel that these decisions (on who goes home) are going to be the really critical ones for me,” said Meehan, who played on “Survivor: South Pacific” and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “The biggest obstacle is not having an opponent out here. The biggest obstacle has been my mind.”
On Day 31, it was Fan Reynold Toepfer who was voted out and joined the jury. The jury members attend Tribal Council, but don’t participate, but will ultimately pick which of the final three will win the $1 million prize.
The Immunity Challenge involved balancing on a triangular shaped floating platform.
The winner of the challenge would not only get immunity, but information on the game. At the beginning of the challenge host Jeff Probst offered doughnuts and milk to anyone who wanted to drop out of the challenge and Fan Eddie Fox and Favorite Erik Reichenbach took him up on it.
After 15 minutes, when Probst offered hot dogs, Favorite John Cochran, who felt his strength waning, took the offer.
Meehan was fifth to fall out of the challenge, followed by Fan Sherri Biethman. Then it was Toepfer who lost his balance.
Favorites Andrea Boehlke and Brenda Lowe were the last two in and lasted a few more hours before deciding to lift up their left leg. Boehlke won the challenge. The information was a clue to where an Immunity Idol was hidden — the one that Boehlke prevented voted-out Favorite Malcolm Freberg from finding the day before with a clue he bought at the "Survivor" auction.
Boehlke shared the clue with her alliance of six and they found the Immunity Idol — and Reichenbach, who unearthed the idol, handed it over to Boehlke.
“Some blindsides need to happen before it happens to me,” Boehlke said. She was targeting Lowe, who she saw as a threat in challenges and who hasn’t offended anyone. Boehlke also brought up Meehan's name.
At Tribal Council, the issue of trust and outwitting others was part of the pre-vote discussion.
“The longer I play this time and I, you know, play both sides of something, the harder it is for me to trust people at all because I know I’m not trustworthy at times or I haven’t been,” Meehan said.
“What Dawn said is one most honest things anybody’s ever said at Tribal — it’s that sometimes your paranoia comes because you know you aren’t trustworthy,” Probst said.
In the end, it was four votes Toepfer, two votes Fox, one vote Biethman and one vote Boehlke.
On Day 33, the Immunity Challenge required threading a buoy along a rope and through an obstacle course and then undoing knots at the end to get a key to a chest of ladder rung puzzle pieces, then placing them in the ladder puzzle and climbing to a platform and releasing an immunity flag.
It was Reichenbach who won immunity.
Boehlke targeted Lowe and again brought up Meehan’s name. Meehan is one of Cochran’s closest allies in the game and Cochran confided Boehlke's plan to both Lowe and Meehan. They devised a plan to blindside Boehlke — splitting the vote between Fox and Boehlke in case she played her immunity idol.
Boehlke felt comfortable enough with her assumed alliance to not play the idol.
It was two votes for Lowe, two for Fox and three for Boehlke and a surprised Boehlke became the next member of the jury.
There are six left — four Favorites and two Fans.
Previews for the next episode show that it’s time for the family member visits, which is usually really emotional for some of the players.
“Survivor: Caramoan — Fans vs. Favorites” airs Wednesday evenings on CBS.
