USU golf: Tanner Higham tied for fourth following second round of 2013 WAC Golf Championships

Utah State’s Tanner Higham carded a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and is currently tied for fourth place with a 3-over 147 (73-74) at the 2013 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference men’s golf championship held at the Rio Secco Golf Club.

New Mexico State has a 17-shot lead on the field after day two of competition with an 8-over 584 (286-298). UT Arlington (294-307) and San Jose State (296-305) are tied for second at 25-over 601, while Utah State (292-312) and UTSA (293-311) are tied for fourth at 28-over 604. Denver is in sixth place with a 30-over 606 (300-306), followed by Idaho in seventh place with a 31-over 607 (294-313), Texas State in eighth place with a 34-over 610 (302-308), Louisiana Tech in ninth place with a 39-over 615 (305-310) and Seattle in 10th place with a 47-over 623 (297-326).

Three players are tied at the top of the leaderboard at 1-over par 145, including two players from New Mexico State in Kenneth Fadke (71-74) and Willy Hogan (70-75), along with UTSA’s J.J. Lindsey (69-76).

Higham, a junior from Shelley, Idaho, had the third-best round of the day Tuesday as he shot a 4-over 40 on the front nine with two bogeys and a double bogey, before carding a 2-under 34 on the back nine with three birdies and one bogey. Higham and three other players are just two shots behind the leaders.

Freshmen Seokwon Jeon (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Reed Platke (Whitefish, Mont.) are both tied for 20th place at 8-over 152 as Jeon began the tournament with a 1-under 71 before carding a 9-over 81 Tuesday, and Platke opened with a 1-over 73 before firing an 8-over 79 during his second round Tuesday. Senior Kris Sayer (Idaho Falls, Idaho) is tied for 37th place at 13-over 157 (79-78), and fellow senior Brendan Dennis (Roosevelt, Utah) is in 48th place with a 17-over 161 (75-86).

The 54-hole tournament will conclude Wednesday with the final round beginning at 7 a.m. (PT). On Wednesday, USU golfers will be grouped with players from Denver with tee times starting at 8:20 a.m. (PT).
