Utah State freshman golfer Reed Platke (Whitefish, Mont.) carded an even-par 72 during his final round to finish tied for 23rd with a 3-over 219 (74-73-72) at the BYU hosted PING Cougar Classic held at the Riverside Country Club.

Utah State, which shot the fourth-lowest round of the day with its season-best 5-under 283, moved from eighth into seventh place in the nine-team field with a 10-over 874 (290-301-283). Host BYU won the team championship with a 32-under 832 (279-276-277), while BYU’s Zachary Blair took medalist honors by one stroke with a 14-under par 202 (66-68-68).

Platke began the tournament by carding a 2-over 74 during his opening round, before carding a 1-over 73 during his second 18 holes, and concluded the tournament with his even-par 72 for his second-lowest 54-hole score of the season and his third-best tournament finish. Freshman Seokwon Jeon (Salt Lake City, Utah) carded a final round 1-under 71 for USU to finish 36th with a 6-over 222 (71-80-71).

Senior Kris Sayer (Idaho Falls, Idaho) had the best round of the day for Utah State as he shot a collegiate-low 6-under 66 to finish tied for 37th with a 7-over 223 (79-78-66) for his best tournament finish of the season. Furthermore, Sayer’s final round of 66 on Saturday is the best by an Aggie golfer since junior Tanner Higham (Shelley, Idaho) shot an opening round 66 at the 2012 Wyoming hosted Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. Higham, who carded a final round 7-over 79 Saturday, also tied for 37th along with Sayer at 7-over 223 (71-73-79). Senior Brendan Dennis (Roosevelt, Utah) also competed for Utah State and finished the tournament tied for 42nd at 9-over 225 (74-77-74).

Utah State will return to action on Monday, April 29, when it travels to Henderson, Nev., to compete in the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Championships, which concludes on Wednesday, May 1.
