TAYLORSVILLE — Whenever Bingham and Alta square off, regardless of the sport, you can always expect an intense, close competition. That was no different on Saturday at the 23-team Taylorsville Invitational.

In a meet that wasn’t decided until the final event of the evening, Alta’s boys narrowly edged Bingham for the team title, 96.5 to 95.5.

Brandon Smart came up huge for the Hawks, winning the 100 and 200 meters, while Kramer Morton won the 1,600 meters and Sam Roberts the 300 hurdles.

Jordan finished fifth with 54 points, but as usual the Beetdigger throwers were outstanding as Lavontae Calhoun won the shotput and Christian Shaver the discus and javelin. Jordan javelin teammate Austin Kafentzis didn’t participate in the meet as he was attending the University of Wisconsin spring football game.

Murray’s Bradford Strobell had arguably the best performance of the meet on the boys side. He soared 22-00.25 in the long jump, the second-best mark in Utah this season.

While Bingham’s boys narrowly finished second, the girls, led by senior Emily Rich, ran away with the team title. Rich won both the 800 and 1,600, and her 2:14.83 time in the 800 meters is the second-best mark in Utah this season.

Bingham finished with 113 team points, followed by Rock Springs, Wyo., with 83 and Copper Hills with 58.

Bingham's two other event winners were Raynee Helm in the 200 meters and Bethany Foster in the pole vault.
