High school wrestling: Payson star Jed Mellen to compete in prestigious national event
Scott G. Winterton, Deseret News
The high school wrestling career of Payson star Jed Mellen isn’t quite over just yet. The Payson senior, after winning his third state title for the Lions program and taking fifth place at the NHSCA Senior Nationals held in Virginia Beach, Va., has one more meet to test his wares against top national talent.
Mellen will represent Team USA as it battles against Team Illinois in the Wrestling USA Magazine/Cliff Keen Athletic Dream Team Dual Meet Classic set to take place at Elmhurst College in Illinois on Saturday, April 20.
The meet will feature some of the best wrestlers in the United States taking on the top-ranked Illinois wrestlers. The Prairie State is considered one of the best states in high school wrestling.
Mellen, who is ranked No. 6 in the country at 132 pounds, will take on No. 11-ranked George Fisher of Marmion Academy (Ill.).
Mellen has had a prestigious career at Payson High, winning three state titles and being a four-time state finalist.
This year Mellen won the Reno Tournament of Champions, was second at The Rumble and finished fifth at Senior Nationals. He was a team captain for the Lions program that finished second in the 3A state tournament in February.
This is the second year for this event. Team USA took a 31-15 victory last year, but with 12 of 13 Illinois’ grapplers ranked in the top 20, the dual meet looks to be hotly contested this time around.
