OREM — The track was running fast at Timpanogos High School on Friday — very fast.

Some of the best times in the state were recorded at the Alpha Invitational this week, with Riverton’s boys and Orem’s girls ultimately prevailing at the 19-team meet.

The sprinters stole the show on the boys side. Four of the five fastest 200 meter times in Utah were recorded at the Alpha Invite, with Alta’s Brandon Smart winning the race in 22.15.

American Fork’s Jonah Trinnaman ran the second-fastest 100 time in Utah this year with a 10.89, while Alta’s Sam Roberts ran the fastest 300 meter time in the state at 39.15.

All three boys relays were state-best times as well.

It wasn’t all about the sprinters, though. Timpanogos distance runner Jacob Heslington posted a 1:54.47 in the 800 meters, the second best mark in Utah this year. Alta’s Kramer Morton and East’s Tomy Gutierrez posted top four times in the 1,600 while Gutierrez posted a top five time in the 3,200.

Jordan’s LaVontae Calhoun recorded the best throw in the shot put at 55’08.50.

The girls were equally as impressive, particularly a couple of Orem girls as they led the Tigers to an easy team victory over Bingham.

Orem sprinter Samantha Reeves ran the third-fastest 100-meter time in Utah this year, while teammate Summer Harper ran the third-fastest 1,600 time.

Wasatch’s Kaitlin Walker ran the second-fastest 300 hurdles time with a 45.20, while Emily Rich’s 11.00.74 in the 3,200 ranks third in the state.

Morgan’s Kassie Nagel was sensational once again in the shot put. Her throw of 41’01.50 is the best mark in Utah this year. She also won the discus.

Other multi-event winners were Bingham’s Chelsea Ward, winning the long jump and high jump, and then Orem’s Reeves winning the 100 and 200.
