With their second straight week of two-plus games, the Wasatch High School softball team nailed down its final win before spring break on Friday, beating the visiting Union Lady Cougars 11-1 in six innings.
The Wasps jumped out early 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as they dominated the Cougars' pitchers, scoring in all but one inning. “We’ve really been hitting the ball,” said Wasatch head coach Gary Roberts. “Today our defense was awesome to go with the hits, so it’s nice to see it all come together.”
Wasatch starting pitcher Ashlynn Davis was stingy on the mound as she surrendered only two hits the entire game. The Cougars' only run came in the top of the second inning after Wasatch had committed one of its only two errors on the afternoon.
Catcher Renee Fagg continued her tear at the plate with a three RBI performance on Friday. The senior, who has committed to play softball at Snow College next year, doubled and hit a home run, her third of the season. “She can really swing it,” said assistant coach Clint Kelson. "When she works it down the lines and in the gaps, she's dangerous," he added. "These are things we're working on with her to get her ready for the next level. But she's ready already," Kelson said with a grin.
Fagg had plenty of help in this game. Junior Hailey Hardman had two hits, including a triple, and sophomore Jensyn Baker continued her rise to the top of the varsity ranks, knocking in a pair of runs with a single. Camille Cluff, Tristin Bills, Torri Bills and Daphne Davis each had a pair of hits for the home team.
The win on Friday, which improved the Wasps to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in region 10, culminated an eventful week for Wasatch. On Monday the Lady Wasps traveled to Stansbury for a makeup of their season opener and lost handily, 11-1.
Instead of letting that defeat take some wind out of their sails, the Lady Wasps put on a refuse-to-lose effort against tough region foe Uintah on Tuesday and won 11-10 in front of an appreciative home crowd.
Under blue but chilly skies in Heber City, the Wasatch girls played what might have been their most exciting game of the year. A see-saw battle that the home team was mainly in control of throughout turned ugly for the Wasps in the top of the sixth inning as they surrendered an 8-4 lead. The Utes scored six runs in the top half of the inning, and Wasatch suddenly found itself down by two runs.
But Wasatch battled back and tied it up, setting the stage for an exciting seventh inning. With Teanna Christensen pinch running for Daphne Davis at third base, Fagg, who was 3-4 so far in the game, stepped into the box and laced a base hit through the left side, scoring the game winner.
Fagg and Hardman combined for five RBIs in the game, and Cluff, who was 4-4, added one. Narissa Childs had three hits for Wasatch and Baker added another pair.
After Friday’s win against Union, when asked if he thought his team was better than he expected it to be, coach Roberts smiled and said, “We’ve been playing harder than I thought we would but I won’t say better. I knew these girls had it in them, it was just getting them to put in the work,” he added. “But — we’re really just getting started here. There is a lot of improvement to be made. I feel pretty good though that these kids are going to keep working at it. So far, it's been as fun as I thought it would be.”
