HURRICANE — Dixie’s boys track team was a non-factor at last year’s 3A state meet, finishing in 14th place with just 18 points.

A year later, the Flyers are looking like a state title contender.

Dixie finished with three individual champions and also won two relays to capture the team title at the Hurricane Valley Rotary Invitational on Friday. The Flyers tallied 140 points, with Desert Hills close behind in second with 129.5 points, followed by host Hurricane with 122.5 points.

Brayden Riding won the 200 meters for Dixie, while teammate Jacob Beers won the 400 and Lukas Hildebrandt won the 300 hurdles.

Dixie’s Kyler Smith finished second in the high jump after clearing 6’03, the same height first-place finisher Chandler Swaney cleared. Both are top 10 jumps in Utah this season.

On the girls side, Cedar rode the legs of its bevy of sprinters to a first-place finish. It tallied 158 points, followed by host Hurricane at 134.5 point and Dixie a distant third at 88.

Cedar’s Brooklyn Shakespeare, Aimee Bryson, Emily Morris and Megan Taylor swept the top four spots in the 100 meters, and Shakespeare’s time of 13.01 is a top 10 performance in Utah this year.

Bryson followed up her second-place finish in the 100 by winning the 200 with a time of 26.67, also a top 10 performance.

Snow Canyon freshman Jenny Stewart also registered a top 10 performance in the 200, finishing right behind Bryson at 26.72.

Senior Kayla Shakespeare was Cedar’s other individual champ as she won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.37, over a second faster than anyone else in the field.
