TOOELE — An inmate at the Tooele County Detention Center was discovered dead in his cell on Monday from an apparent suicide, according to officials.

Robert Allan Shutt, 37, was found lying unconscious on the floor of his cell around 5 p.m. Monday by a jail officer who was delivering dinner to inmates, said Tooele County Sheriff's Lt. Travis Scharmann. The officer attempted to revive Shutt and administered CPR until medical personnel arrived, Scharmann said. Shutt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shutt was being held on charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and theft stemming from an incident on March 20. He was booked into the Tooele County Detention Center last Thursday, Scharmann said.

Investigators believe Shutt committed suicide by strangulation, but Scharmann declined to provide specific information on the cause of death. He said that Shutt did not share a cell with another inmate and no contraband was discovered at the scene.

"It was an unfortunate incident," Scharmann said. "We can't find any procedure that had been violated."

Court records show that over the last 20 years, Shutt pleaded guilty to charges of retail theft, possession of a controlled substance, joyriding and attempted absconding.
