Utah Jazz notebook: It's a girl — for Millsap and Foye
Scott G Winterton, Deseret News
SALT LAKE CITY — Thursday was quite the day for the Utah Jazz family.
Both Paul Millsap and Randy Foye welcomed babies into their worlds on the team's off day.
The great excuse to miss practice wasn't the only thing they shared.
Both Jazz players became proud papas of little girls. They now each have three children, all daughters.
And, get this, both have similar names.
Millsap's daughter was named Paular.
Foye's little girl was named Pilar.
And, no, they didn't plan it that way.
"Same day, same name. It's crazy," Millsap said. "What a coincidence, really."
"I've never heard of that before," said Foye, adding that he and Millsap didn't know their significant others were being induced on the same day until earlier this week. "I think that's probably once in a lifetime."
Both players were still on cloud nine when they returned to their day jobs on Friday.
"For me, nothing tops that, not even being drafted, not doing anything else," Foye said. "That's the best feeling to me."
Same goes for Millsap, who didn't play Friday because of a sprained left ankle.
"It's good I'm able to get away from an injury. I can get away from the outside world and just focus on my family, a beautiful moment for me," Millsap said. "I'm glad it happened. Now I can get back to basketball."
As another reporter joked, Millsap agreed that he wasn't about to complain about his ankle hurting while his life delivered a baby Thursday.
"Absolutely. I don’t think no one cares," he said, laughing. "No one cares, especially her. She didn't care. The doctor didn’t care (if I said) I'm in some pain, I'm in pain."
The Jazz family additions were the third and fourth for players in the organization since training camp started on Oct. 1. Kevin Murphy's wife delivered Kevin Murphy Jr. at the beginning of camp, and Mo Williams' wife had Maxwell Roman in February.
Williams laughed when asked if the team took a field trip to the maternity ward on Thursday to see the newest babies.
"Not yet. We should," he said. "That's the first time that that happened."
Corbin was excited for both players' families.
"It's interesting," the Jazz coach said. "I don't know how they got to that point, but I'm extremely happy that both wives are doing well, the babies are doing well.
"It's a blessing to have kids in your family."
For the record, Foye's baby arrived first.
"He one-upped me on that one," Millsap said, smiling.
THREE-POINT LEADER: Foye was still sporting his hospital bracelet on his right wrist during Friday's game in which he became the Jazz's single-season 3-point leader. He hit the 130th trey of the season, surpassing Mehmet Okur's record of 129 from 2006-07.
"Memo sent me a tweet saying, 'Congratulations,' so it means a lot," said Foye, also mentioning that it's an honor to be mentioned alongside Jeff Hornacek. "I know how important Memo was and the shots that he made for this team. Just to be mentioned with those guys is truly an honor."
Foye has been impressed by Okur since he began his NBA career in Minnesota.
"Memo is a great player and great shooter," Foye said. "This is just hats off to what I do in the summer. I just work really hard shooting the ball."
RAJA REMAINS A JAZZMAN: Guard Raja Bell remains in exile in Miami — and, more importantly, he is still on the Jazz roster.
Bell publicly criticized Corbin last season and hasn’t been with Utah this year despite being under contract, but he opted to not accept a buyout offer the Jazz tendered him in an effort to get out of part of the $3.48 million he's owed in the 2012-13 season.
Friday was the deadline for players to sign with teams in order to be eligible to participate in the postseason, so he can't play in the playoffs even if he is waived by the Jazz and picked up by another team.
