High school boys basketball: 5A first-round playoffs roundup
Recap of Monday's 5A state tournament first-round games:
Alta overcame a 12-point first-half deficit and then knocked down 11 straight free throws in the final two minutes to hold off Bingham for the 5A first-round victory. Landon Albrecht scored 18 points to lead Alta, while Trevor Hill chipped in with 17 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line.
Alta protected the ball very well in the victory, only turning it over six times, with most of those occurring in the first half.
American Fork overcame an 11-point deficit in the first quarter to rally for the 5A first-round victory over Jordan. The Cavemen pulled away late with free-throw shooting, making 17 of 18 for the game. Tyler Rawson led American Fork with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Ryan Andrus added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Travis Devashrayee and Brandon Miller combined for 41 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bengals to the first-round victory. Brighton only committed six turnovers while forcing Pleasant Grove into 14 turnovers. Riley Court led Pleasant Grove with 14 points in the loss.
Braden Koelliker scored 17 points and added 11 rebounds, while Abel Porter chipped in with 12 points and Chance Parker added 10 as Davis rolled over Kearns for the 5A first-round victory. The Darts forced Kearns into 18 turnovers and finished the game shooting 44 percent.
Lone Peak shot 60 percent from the field, including 50 percent from 3-point range (12 of 24), in an easy 5A first-round victory over West Jordan. Nick Emery led the Knights with 22 points, with Eric Mika and T.J. Haws each adding 19 points. Lone Peak enjoyed a 23-0 edge in fast-break points, a 22-1 edge in points off turnovers, a 40-12 edge in points in the paint and a 31-18 rebounding edge.
Diante Mitchell scored 21 points on 15-of-18 shooting from the free-throw line and added five steals to lead Syracuse to the convincing victory over Region 2 champion Hunter. Syracuse and Hunter both shot 34 percent from the field, but Syracuse attempted 29 free throws while Hunter made just eight trips to the free-throw line. Daulton Whatcott added 13 rebounds and eight rebounds for Syracuse, while Brandon Davies led Hunter with 17 points.
Viewmont outscored Northridge 31-17 in the second half en route to the impressive 5A first-round victory over Region 1 runner-up Northridge. McKay Johnson and Jarom Tye each scored 14 points for the Vikings, who shot 40 percent compared to 26 percent for Northridge. Northridge struggled mightily from the floor, shooting just 26 percent from the field, including 17 percent in the second half. The Knights were 7 of 41 from 3-point range.
Weber's Hayden Schenck easily led his team to the first-round victory as he nearly had a triple double, finishing with 17 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. No. 3 Weber jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter, and pulled away for good by outscoring West 40-25 in the second half. Jaren McKnight added 15 points and Austin Tesch chipped in with 12 more as Weber shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded West 43-31.
