USU track: Taylor places eighth in pentathlon to lead USU on day one of WAC Indoor Championships
Utah State women's track and field sophomore Cree Phillips Taylor placed eighth with a personal-best point total of 3,295 in the pentathlon Thursday at day one of the three-day 2013 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Taylor also set personal-best marks in the 60m hurdles (8.97) to place third and in the high jump with a leap of 1.58m (5-02.25) to tie for eighth place.
Texas State took the early lead for the women's WAC title with 13 points, followed by New Mexico State (12), Idaho (8), UT Arlington (5) and Utah State (1). The men will finish the men's heptathlon with three events on Friday, starting at 11 a.m. (MT). The first field event finals will start at 1:30 p.m. Friday, while the track finals start at 4 p.m. Saturday's action will kick off with the field events at 11 a.m., followed by the running events at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony will take place at the conclusion of the meet.
"Our women did a great job of having season-best marks, but the competition was very tough today. For them to place where they did I thought was great for them," Aggie coach Gregg Gensel said. "Jon (Goble) put himself in a good position going into the last day of the heptathlon. He is a good hurdler and pole vaulter and his second day is usually better than his first day. He is close to second place and should be able to do very well."
On the men's side, senior Jon Goble sits in third place after the first day of the heptathlon with 2,784 points. Goble set personal-best marks in three of the four events Thursday including a time of 7.15 in the 60m dash, a height of 1.86m (6-01.25) in the high jump and throw of 13.43m (44-00.75) in the shot put. UT Arlington's Romain Martin is in first place with 3,228 points, along with his teammate Brando Blanchard sitting in third place (2,842 points). Senior Sam Hawkins for Utah State heads into day two in 10th place with a point total of 2,310.
The USU women also had freshman Trish Adams place 11th in the pentathlon with a personal-best 3,159 points, while sophomore McKenzie Johnson tallied 12th place honors (3,141 points).
Following the 2013 edition of the WAC Indoor Championships, Utah State will send athletes to compete in the UW Final Qualifier on Friday, March 1, in Seattle, Wash. Athletes that qualify will then travel to Randal Tyson Track in Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 8-9.
