UVU basketball: first-place Wolverines head to Chicago for key GWC game
OREM, Utah — The first-place Utah Valley University women's basketball team will head to the Windy City this weekend for a key Great West Conference game at Chicago State. The contest will mark UVU's final GWC regular season road game as it will head to the Western Athletic Conference this summer.
Saturday's game will tipoff at 4 p.m. MT at CSU's Jones Convocation Center. Live audio of the game can be heard by visiting WolverineGreen.com, while live stats and live video can be found at GoCSUCougars.com.
The Wolverines are 11-14 overall and atop the conference standings with a 5-1 mark in league play. UVU is coming off a 51-50 victory in Edinburg, Texas, over Texas-Pan American last Saturday in which senior Sammie Jensen scored the game-winner with 2.5 seconds left.
Jensen led the Wolverines in the game with 21 points and 21 rebounds. The double-double was her 17th on the season, which is a new UVU single-season school record. The UVU forward was named the GWC Player of the Week for the seventh time this season on Tuesday after she averaged 21.5 points and 20 rebounds in two games for the Wolverines last week. Besides her 21 and 21 she put up against the Broncs, she also led UVU in a 55-51 loss earlier in the week at New Orleans with 22 points and 19 rebounds.
Jensen leads Utah Valley on the season with averages of 17.4 ppg and 13.6 rpg. Jensen's 13.6 rebounds per game is good enough to rank her second in the nation in that category. She also leads the Great West in rebounding and is ranked second in the conference scoring, as she is just one-tenth of a point behind Houston Baptist's Shanice Steenholdt.
Behind Jensen, Doughty is second on the team in scoring with an average of 10.7 ppg while Mansfield is third at 9.2 ppg. Mansfield is also second on the team in rebounding with 7.1 rpg.
About Chicago State: Chicago State is currently in third place in the conference standings with a 2-2 record but is just 4-21 overall. The Cougars defeated NJIT, Houston Baptist and Western Illinois all at home last month but have since dropped their last three games.
Paris Williams leads CSU in scoring with an average of 8.7 ppg, but three other players are right behind her, as Tierra Williams, Jackie Jones and Jasmine Collins average 8.3, 8.1 and 7.9 points per game, respectively. Layne Murphy is tops on the club in rebounding with 5.6 rpg.
Saturday's game will be the second meeting of the season between UVU and CSU after the Wolverines defeated the Cougars by 33 points (71-38) on Jan. 12 in Orem. It will also mark the 15th all-time meeting between the two future WAC foes. CSU currently holds a slight 8-6 advantage.
Up Next for the Wolverines: The Wolverines will come home for their two final games of the 2012-13 regular season next week. UVU will step out of GWC play to face future WAC foe CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday and will then play its final Great West game Saturday against Houston Baptist. Wednesday's game will tip at 7 p.m. while Saturday's will begin at 3 p.m.
