BYU football: Cougar coach Bronco Mendenhall hires Guy Holliday, Jason Beck as position coaches

PROVO — BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall announced the hiring of a quarterbacks coach and a receivers coach Friday.
Jason Beck will oversee the quarterbacks and Guy Holliday will oversee the receivers.
Beck, who was a backup quarterback at BYU from 2004-06, has six years of coaching experience, including stops at Louisiana State, Weber State and Simon Fraser University. Holliday comes to BYU from UTEP, where he spent the past five years as the Miners' receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.
“I’m excited to have Guy and Jason join our coaching staff,” Mendenhall said in a statement. “Guy is an experienced wide receivers coach who promotes tough and physical football and has great relationships with his players. He excels in the role of mentoring young people. Jason is an intelligent, poised coach who understands quarterback play and is a great teacher of young men. He is extremely passionate about our football program and the mission of the university. We are fortunate to have both of them at BYU.”
Holliday has logged 22 years of coaching experience, and has helped 21 players go to the NFL, including 20 wide receivers. He also served as an offensive coordinator for six seasons — three at Alabama State and three at Tuskegee University. During those six years, he coached quarterbacks, receivers and running backs as well.
Holliday also spent five years as Mississippi State's wide receivers coach. At Mississippi State, Holliday coached All-SEC receiver Justin Jenkins, who went on to play in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills.
“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Holliday said. “BYU has an outstanding history of football excellence and also academic excellence. I look forward to embracing the spiritual elements of BYU and helping young men be successful.”
Holliday coached some of UTEP's most prolific receivers, including Jeff Moturi (170 catches, 2,527 yards, 26 touchdowns) and Kris Adams (144, 2,657 and 30). The Miners averaged a little more than 3,000 passing yards per season during his time there.
Holliday has three children, including a son, Justin, who is currently a wide receiver at UTEP.
Beck was hired last year as Simon Fraser's offensive coordinator and he immediately turned its offense around. At SFU, a Division II program located in Canada (the only member of the NCAA located outside of the United States), Beck took over an offense that ranked last in its conference in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. In just one season, he transformed SFU into the No. 1 offense in each of those categories in 2012.
“I’m excited to return to BYU. It is a special place for me and my family,” Beck said. “I greatly respect the vision and standards coach Mendenhall sets for the program, and I’m looking forward to being part of his staff. BYU has a great legacy at the quarterback position. It is both a great honor and challenge to live up to the legacy that has been established. I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”
Beck backed up All-America QB John Beck at BYU and started one game as a Cougar, directing a 38-0 blanking of Utah State in 2006.
After his playing career, Beck spent time at Weber State and LSU. At LSU, he served as an offensive intern under then-offensive coordinator, and former BYU coach, Gary Crowton. He also helped coach the quarterbacks as an offensive intern in 2007 at BYU.
Beck earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communications from BYU in 2006 and 2011. He is married to former BYU soccer standout Jaime Rendich. They have a daughter, Peyton.
The hirings of Beck and Holliday are part of an overhaul of the Cougars' offensive coaching staff.
On Jan. 4, Robert Anae was re-hired as BYU's offensive coordinator. That was followed by the hiring of Mark Atuaia (running backs) and Garret Tujague (offensive line). Anae said he and Tujague will coach the offensive line together.
