UVU wrestling: Wolverines fall on road to No. 21 Boise State

BOISE, Idaho — The Utah Valley University wrestling team dropped its second straight dual on the road to a ranked team Wednesday night as it fell 29-10 to No. 21 Boise State at Taco Bell Arena.
The Wolverines (5-4, 2-2 WWC) won just three of the 10 bouts as all four of Boise State's (10-5, 5-1 Pac-12) nationally-ranked wrestlers won their respective matches.
"Boise State is a solid team and I was pleased with what I saw from our guys," UVU head coach Greg Williams said. "Boise wrestles heavy on the head and I felt like we didn't do as good of a job as we should've of fighting that position. That has something to do with our youth and is definitely something that we'll work on."
The dual began at heavyweight and the Broncos jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two matches thanks to a pin by No. 14 J.T. Felix over UVU's Adam Fager (1:52) and a forfeit at 125-pounds. Chasen Tolbert (133 pounds) then got the Wolverines on the scoreboard with a 14-0 major decision over BSU's Manny Ybarra. Tolbert took control early in the bout and didn't look bad as he cruised to the easy major decision.
Boise State answered back from there, however, as it won the next three bouts to take a 23-4 lead. BSU's Travis Himmelman started the rally with a 12-3 major decision over Avery Garner (141). No. 2 Jason Chamberlain followed it up by defeating Josh Wilson (149) 10-4, and No. 17 George Ivanov took care of business against Chase Cuthbertson with a 15-5 major decision over him.
UVU 165-pounder and Idaho-native Abner Cook then put a stop to the Boise State rally with a 5-0 decision over Holden Packard. Cook's victory pulled the Wolverines to within 23-7 at the time.
BSU then put the dual away by winning the next two matches but a late third-period takedown by David Prieto in the final dual of the evening gave the Wolverine sophomore a 3-2 win over Cody Dixon. The final bout was tied at 1-1 late in the contest, but Prieto's takedown in the closing seconds was the difference as he gave UVU its third win of the night.
The loss snapped UVU's win streak over Pac-12 schools at five consecutive duals, while the victory for Boise State was its eighth straight dual win.
The Wolverines will conclude their 2013 regular season by hosting the Air Force Academy for a Western Wrestling Conference dual Saturday at 7 p.m. at the PE Building. Prior to the start of the match, UVU will honor seniors Glenn Terrano and Wilson.
"Saturday will be a real battle," added Williams. "Air Force is a good team that is in the top 25 of some of the rankings. They have two guys ranked in the top 10 and don't have a weak weight class. It should be a fun one for the fans with a lot of close matches."
