WEST VALLEY CITY — Two men were arrested over the weekend after police say one of them fired shots into his ex-girlfriend's apartment.

A couple of the rounds lodged into the bunk bed where the woman's children — two girls, ages 4 and 5 — would normally be sleeping, but they happened to be out of the room at the time, said West Valley Police Sgt. Jason Hauer.

The incident began about 7:30 p.m. Friday. Police responded to a report of shots fired at 3478 S. Cozy River Place (1225 West). Three shots were fired into a woman's apartment window, Hauer said.

Based on the description of a vehicle that witnesses saw leaving the area, the woman believed a former boyfriend may be a suspect, Hauer said.

About 3:45 a.m. on Saturday, investigators located the vehicle. Information collected from that scene led detectives to 5931 W. Ridge Flower Way (5900 South).

The alleged shooter, Junior Enrique Hernandez Alvarez, was arrested for investigation of attempted murder, being a restricted person in possession of a firearm, a federal weapons violation and drug possession. Alvarez was originally booked into the Salt Lake County Jail but then claimed he was only 17 and was moved to juvenile detention, Hauer said. Investigators suspect Alvarez, who is in the country illegally, is really an adult and were still attempting Monday to verify his age.

Detectives served a search warrant on the house where the man was arrested. Inside, they found cocaine, heroin and drug paraphernalia. A second man, Alberto Garcia, 20, who is not believed to be involved with the shooting, was arrested for investigation of drug possession with intent to distribute. Hauer said he also was believed to be in the country illegally.
