USU track: Aggies claim three event titles at Boise State Team Challenge on Saturday
The Utah State men's and women's track and field teams won three events as part of 16 top-six finishes at the Boise State Team Challenge in Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday. A handful of long-distance runners also competed for USU at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
Winning their event for the Aggie women at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa was sophomore Brittany Bushman with a personal-best time of 5:10.38 in the mile race, along with fellow sophomore Jodi Williams who tied her career-best height of 1.75m (5-08.75) to win her third-straight high jump event title.
Junior Jacob Bautista Jr. represented the Utah State men at the top of the podium in the 60m dash with a personal-best time of 7.10 to win his first event since transferring to USU from Sacramento City College. Bautista Jr. also tabbed a third-place finish in the 200m with a career-best time of 22.50.
"One thing we wanted to do this weekend was give everyone an opportunity to improve in their events and get great marks. I think we accomplished that," USU head coach Gregg Gensel said. "The thing you want from all of the athletes is to improve and show potential at this level of competition, so the top-10 marks in school history and personal-bests are the types of marks we like to see at this point in the season."
Freshman Tylee Newman led Utah State at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., by winning her heat in the women's mile race and placing second overall with the third-fastest time in school history (4:47.97). The time is also the second-best time in the event in the Western Athletic Conference this season.
Other top-six placers for the Aggie women at the Boise State Team Challenge included junior Aubriann Bosen who placed fourth in the 60m hurdles (9.34), freshman Amanda Stoudt who finished fifth in the mile race (5:21.55), as well as freshman Kelsey Girardelli and sophomore Ashley Robison who placed third and fourth in the 3,000m with times of 10:23.73 and 10:27.82, respectively.
Placing third for the Utah State men was sophomore Chris Martinez in the 3,000m race (8:41.87). Sophomore Tom Derr followed closely behind to finish in fifth place (8:51.18). Freshman Tyler Stephens clocked a time of 8.90 in the 60m hurdles, which was good enough for fourth place, while sophomores Drew Povey and CJ O'Neal, and freshman Camden Gillins placed fifth in the 800m, triple jump and long jump events with marks of 1:55.48, 12.34 (40-06.00) and 6.19m (20-03.75), respectively. Freshman Tyler Roberts rounded out the top-six performances for the USU men as he placed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:24.67.
The Aggies will take a week off competition this next week in order to have a full two weeks to prepare for the 2013 WAC Indoor Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 21-23.
