The Wolverines (7-13, 2-1 GWC) are coming off back-to-back heartbreaking losses after falling by two (67-65) at CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 19 and by three (49-46) at NJIT last Saturday.
UVU had a chance to tie the score at the buzzer in both games, but both game-tying shots rimmed out. The loss to NJIT was UVU's first GWC defeat on the year. Utah Valley will enter Saturday's contest at HBU in the three-way tie atop the conference standings with NJIT and Chicago State with identical 2-1 conference records.
Despite the loss to the Highlanders, senior forward Kaycee Mansfield continued her hot-shooting in conference play with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She also added her third double-double of the year with 11 rebounds. Mansfield is now shooting 71.4 percent (15-for-21) from the floor in conference-only play.
Fellow senior forward Sammie Jensen led the Wolverines on the glass in the game with 14 boards, but she just missed out on recording her 15th double-double of the season as she had only eight points.
Jensen leads the Wolverines and the Great West in scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.2 ppg and 12.8 rpg. Her 12.8 rebounds per game also ranks her fourth in the country in that category. Sophomore guard Tina Doughty is next in the scoring column for UVU with an average of 8.9 ppg and Mansfield follows with 8.7.
About Houston Baptist: The HBU Huskies are 4-16 overall and 0-2 in GWC play this season. Houston Baptist was picked to finish last in the league's preseason poll after going 1-27 and 0-10 in conference play last year. The Huskies have announced 2012-13 will be their last season in the Great West, as they will join the Southland Conference this summer.
Sophomore forward Shanice Steenholdt leads the Huskies and is second in the GWC with 17.1 points per game. Steenholdt also leads the team in rebounding with 9.9 rpg. Sophomore guard Tayler Jefferson is second on the squad in scoring with 9.5 ppg.
Saturday's game will be the seventh all-time meeting between UVU and HBU with the Wolverines holding a perfect 6-0 series advantage. The Wolverines defeated the Huskies, 62-41, in Houston last season. HBU will make the return trip to Orem in UVU's final regular season game March 2.
About Walla Walla: Walla Walla University is an NAIA Division II Independent from Walla Walla, Wash. The Wolves are 7-21 on the season with five of their wins coming over Northwest Indian College.
Senior guard Dani Carlman leads Walla Walla in scoring with 11.1 points per game. Sophomore guard Abbey Manzano is next with an average of 8.3 ppg.
The game will be the second all-time meeting between the schools with the Wolverines holding a 1-0 advantage. UVU and WWU met up last season in Orem and the Wolverines won the contest by 58 points (104-46).
Up Next for the Wolverines: UVU will again face NJIT when the Highlanders come to the UCCU Center next Saturday, Feb. 9.
