USU track: Aggies collect nine top-six marks on day one of UNM's Cherry & Silver Invitational on Friday
The Utah State men and women's track and field teams collected nine top-six finishes Friday at the first day of the Cherry & Silver Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
Crossing the finish line with a second-place finish in the men's 200m was junior Silas Pimentel with a time of 21.58, along with sophomore Nic Bowens placing fifth (21.96) in the same event. Junior Bryce Hall took third place in the weight throw with a mark of 18.30m (60-00.50) as sophomore Michael Cardinal followed closely and finished in fifth place with a throw of 17.82m (58-05.75). Junior Xavier Williford cleared 2.04m (6-08.25) to take fifth place on a judge's decision in the men's high jump, while freshman Skyler Duke placed tied for sixth with a jump of 1.99m (6-06.25).
On the women's side, sophomore high jumper Rachel Orr cleared 1.68m (5-06.00) to claim third place on a judge's decision to lead the USU women in the event, while junior Keeley Eldredge and sophomore Melanie Heslop tabbed fifth and sixth place finishes in the women's weight throw with tosses of 17.03m (55-10.50) and 15.83m (51:11.25), respectively. For Eldredge, the mark is a personal-best throw and also ranks her sixth all-time in school history for the event.
"We wanted to see where everybody was at because you always have first meet jitters at the beginning of the season," USU coach Gregg Gensel said. "We had some great performances today, especially for this point in the season. On both the women and men's side I think we had some really good performances."
The men and women's 400m and mile races, as well as the women's 3,000m run, had half of their scheduled heats compete Friday and will conclude Saturday with the final heats in each event. All places for those events are not final and are subject to change based on the results in the heats Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m. (MT) with the women's long jump and will conclude with the women's 4x400 relay at approximately 4:20 p.m.
Sophomore Ashley Robison won heat two of the women's 3,000m, breaking the tape with a time of 10:38.93. Robison will await to see the results of heat one that will take place Saturday at 3:50 p.m. to see where she finishes in the final standings. Freshman Kelsey Girardelli also ran the 3,000m and crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 10:54.43. Freshman Tylee Newman also started the season strong with a time of 5:05.80 and is currently in second place in the women's mile.
Other Aggie women who finished their heats and will now wait for tomorrow's results include freshman Kaitlyn Wilcox who sits in third place in the women's 400m with a time of 58.02 and fellow freshman Mikkel Minnoch who is in sixth place (58.42) in the same event.
On the men's side in the mile run, sophomores Eric Shellhorn and Chris Martinez are in fourth and fifth places with times of 4:19.25 and 4:23.94, respectively, with one heat left to compete Saturday.
