Once again opening their season on the road, Utah State gymnastics is set to kick off the 2013 campaign at in-state rival BYU on Saturday, Jan. 12. Competition gets underway at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on BYUtv.
The Aggies return nine letterwinners this season, including two NCAA Regionals qualifiers in Sarah Landes and Paige Jones, and three all-Western Athletic Conference honorees (Landes, first-team floor, second-team all-around; Kaitlyn Betts, second-team vault and Christina Nye, second-team floor). Along with all the talent and experience coming back, USU also welcomes seven new freshmen to the squad, as well as two new assistant coaches.
“We’re just hoping to go out there and get our feet wet and realize the season’s here,” said fifth-year head coach Jeff Richards. “The girls are excited. We’re just trying to get out there and put things together.”
The Cougars are 1-1 so far this season, coming off a week in Mexico at the Cancun Classic. There, they notched a 194.475, defeating No. 9 Oregon State (193.600) and fell to No. 10 Michigan (196.575).
Live results of Saturday's meet will be available by clicking on the "Live Stats" link on the USU athletic website. The link will redirect to BYU's site and will only work after the start of the meet.
Next weekend, the Aggies will head to Boise for the first of three meetings with Boise State on Friday, Jan. 18. The team will then return to the friendly confines of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum to host WAC rival Southern Utah on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
