USU football: Luke Wells named Utah State’s co-offensive coordinator, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator
Luke Wells, who helped Iowa State to back-to-back bowl appearances the past two seasons, has been named Utah State’s co-offensive coordinator, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, it was announced Saturday by Aggie head coach Matt Wells. Luke Wells is the younger brother of Matt Wells.
“I am very happy to announce Luke Wells as a member of our staff,” Matt Wells said. “Luke’s background in the Big 12 Conference for the last four years, along with his familiarity with spread and no-huddle offenses, will be very beneficial here at Utah State. His background in recruiting Texas will be an integral part of our recruiting efforts and we are happy that he and his family are joining our Aggie football family.”
In all, Luke Wells spent four seasons at Iowa State (2009-12) working with the tight ends for the past two years after coaching the wide receivers during his first two seasons in Ames. During the past two years, Luke Wells helped the Cyclones to back-to-back bowl games as it played in the 2011 New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers and the 2012 Auto Zone Liberty Bowl against Tulsa.
“Matt has a track record of being a great football coach and an outstanding recruiter and I’m ecstatic about coming to Utah State and working for my brother, which is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and something we have talked about in the past. It’s an incredible opportunity not only professionally, but personally as well,” Luke Wells said. “I’m excited for the chance to come to a university that’s been extremely successful on the football field and won a bunch of games and to be part of an explosive offense that’s going to put points on the board.”
Prior to his stint at Iowa State, Luke Wells spent six years at Louisiana-Monroe serving as an offensive graduate assistant in 2003 before being elevated to a full-time assistant coach from 2004-08. During his last two years at ULM, Wells served as the Warhawks’ recruiting coordinator, as well as wide receivers coach, and helped bring in the highest-rated recruiting classes in school history.
The Louisiana-Monroe offense posted the highest scoring average in the school’s NCAA FBS history in 2008 as Warhawk wide receiver Anthony McCall set a school record for freshman touchdown receptions that season.
Luke Wells took over the wide receivers at ULM in 2007 and mentored all-Sun Belt second-team selection LaGregory Sapp who led the league in yards per reception with 19.6 on 40 catches for 784 yards. In all, Warhawk receivers caught 16 touchdown passes that year.
In 2004 and 2005, Luke Wells worked with the tight ends and all-Sun Belt first-teamer Joey Trappey who was the top receiving tight end in the Sun Belt with 42 receptions for 425 yards.
Prior to ULM, Luke Wells coached wide receivers at Denton High School in Texas, helping his team win the 2002 bi-district championship.
Before that, Luke Wells was a student assistant coach at Oklahoma from 1999-2001. His responsibilities included assisting with quarterbacks and wide receivers, coaching and coordinating scout team defense and special teams, and assisting with recruiting. His work helped the Sooners win the 2000 Big 12 Conference crown and national title. The Sooners also won the 2001 Cotton Bowl and participated in the 1999 Independence Bowl. Wells worked under several outstanding coaches during his time at OU – Bob Stoops, Mike Leach and Mark Mangino.
Luke Wells earned his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma in secondary education in 2001 and did graduate work at ULM. He is married to the former Coby Groves, and the couple has one son, Walker (5), and one daughter Kinsley (3).
