Chris Hicks: There's an art to summing up movie hype in a brief, snappy tagline

Published: Thursday, Jan. 3 2013 5:00 p.m. MST

“Dark secrets will come to light.” (“Beautiful Creatures,” Feb. 13)

“Earth’s greatest secrets are about to break out.” (“Escape From Planet Earth,” Feb. 14)

“How far would you go to save your son?” (“Snitch,” Feb. 22)

“Choose to believe. Choose to fight. Choose to love.” (“The Host,” March 29)

“Seduction is the devil’s playground.” (“Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor,” March 29)

“Earth is a memory worth fighting for.” (“Oblivion,” April 19)

“Their American dream is bigger than yours.” (“Pain & Gain,” April 26)

“Can’t repeat the past? … of course you can.” (“The Great Gatsby,” May 10)

“The action is extreme.” (“Fast & Furious 6,” May 24)

“Ending summer 2013.” (“This Is the End,” June 14)

“Enrolling 2013.” (“Monsters University,” June 21)

“Never take off the mask.” (“Lone Ranger,” July 3)

“To fight monsters we created monsters.” (“Pacific Rim,” July 12)

“From above the world of cars.” (“Disney’s Planes,” Aug. 9)

“There is a world hidden within our own.” (“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” Aug. 23)

“Good food. Fine ales. Total annihilation.” (“The World’s End,” Oct. 25)

This list is merely a sampling, of course, since most 2013 movies have not yet unveiled their posters and taglines.

And how accurate are these in tipping us off about each film’s plot? We’ll just have to wait and see.
