USU football: Chuckie Keeton and Kerwynn Williams earn College Football Performance honors following Louisiana Tech win
Utah State’s Chuckie Keeton and Kerwynn Williams both earned national honorable mention honors from College Football Performance Awards following its 48-41 Western Athletic Conference overtime win at No. 19 Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
It is the fourth time Keeton has received honorable mention accolades by CFPA this year, while it's Williams fifth time. Keeton earned the honors after wins against San Jose State, New Mexico State and Texas State, while Williams received the accolades following a loss at Wisconsin and wins against Colorado State, UNLV and San Jose State.
Keeton, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound sophomore quarterback from Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek HS), earned honorable mention quarterback performer of the week honors from CFPA as he completed 20-of-34 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long 86-yard pass for a score on USU's first offensive play of the game. Keeton also tied his career-high with 17 rushing attempts and ran for a career-high 121 yards, tying the USU single-game school record by a quarterback. Keeton also tied his career-high with two rushing touchdowns. In the game, Keeton set new single-season school records for touchdown passes (25) and total offense (3,538).
Oklahoma’s Landry Jones and Clemson’s Tajh Boyd were named the national co-quarterback performers of the week by CFPA, while Keeton joined quarterbacks Mike Glennon (North Carolina State), Sam Richardson (Iowa State), Devin Gardner (Michigan), Taylor Kelly (Arizona State), Tyler Russell (Mississippi State), Keith Price (Washington) and Crawford Jones (Houston) as honorable mention award winners.
Keeton ranks second in the WAC and 11th in the nation in total offense (321.6 ypg), second in the WAC and 13th in the nation in passing efficiency (159.1), third in the WAC and 25th in the nation in passing (273.3 ypg), and seventh in the WAC in rushing (47.9 ypg).
Keeton is 237-of-351 passing on the year for 3,011 yards with 25 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He has also carried the ball 113 times for 527 yards with six touchdowns.
Williams, a 5-8, 189-pound senior running back from Las Vegas, Nevada (Valley HS), earned honorable mention running back performer of the week honors from CFPA as he had a record-setting night for Utah State rushing for 162 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. He added 125 yards receiving on four receptions with another score that came on an 86-yard screen pass from Keeton on USU’s first offensive play of the game. In all, Williams’ 303 all-purpose yards, which included 16 yards on a kickoff return, gives him 6,510 all-purpose yards during his career to set the school record.
Temple’s Montel Harris was named the national running back performer of the week by CFPA, while Williams joined running backs Lache Seastrunk (Baylor), Ka’Deem Carey (Arizona), Cierre Wood (Notre Dame), Johnathon Franklin (UCLA), Montee Ball (Wisconsin), Antonio Andrews (Western Kentucky), Devonta Freeman (Florida State) and Beau Blankenship (Ohio) as honorable mention award winners.
On the season, Williams ranks first in the WAC and 10th in the nation in all-purpose yards (159.1 ypg), first in the WAC and 23rd in the nation in rushing (106.1 ypg), third in the WAC and tied for 42nd in the nation in scoring (8.2 ppg), fifth in the WAC in receiving (56.7 ypg), and seventh in the WAC in total offense (106.1 ypg).
Williams has rushed for 1,167 yards on 183 carries in 2012 with 11 touchdowns. He also has 39 receptions for 624 yards and four touchdowns. Williams leads the team in rushing, receiving yards, receptions, scoring and all-purpose yards.
Utah State (9-2, 5-0 WAC), who is ranked tied for 25th in the nation in this week’s Associated Press Poll, is off to its best start to a season since the 1961 team finished the year with a 9-1-1.
