Utah State football: Tyler Bennett and Chuckie Keeton earn College Football Performance honors
Utah State’s Tyler Bennett and Chuckie Keeton earned national honorable mention honors from College Football Performance Awards following the 38-7 Western Athletic Conference home win against Texas Statethis past weekend.
It is the third time Bennett has been honored by CFPA this year as he has now earned honorable mention honors twice. He also received the National Punter of the Week award on Oct. 1 following USU’s win against UNLV. For Keeton, it is the third time this season he has earned honorable mention honors from CFPA.
Bennett, a 5-foot-11, 218-pound senior punter from Phoenix, Ariz. (North Canyon HS/Phoenix CC), earned honorable mention punter of the week honors from CFPA as his only punt of the game was a 57 yarder.
Louisiana Tech’s Ryan Allen was named the national punter performer of the week by CFPA. Joining Bennett as honorable mentions award winners were Richie Hogan (Central Michigan), Andrew Shapiro (Fresno State), Collin Barber (Georgia), Dylan Breeding (Arkansas), Seamus McMorrow (San Diego State), Brad Wing (LSU), Jeff Locke (UCLA), Hunter Mullins (UAB), Justin Manton (Louisiana-Monroe), Chase Lansford (UNLV), Anthony Melchiori (Kent State) and Sean Sellwood (Utah).
On the season, Bennett ranks fourth in the WAC and tied for 31st in the nation in punting (42.4 ypk). He has punted 48 times for 2,033 yards with nine 50-yard punts. He has also had 24 punts downed inside the 20 and only two of his punts have been touchbacks.
Keeton, a 6-1, 200-pound sophomore quarterback from Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek HS), earned honorable mention quarterback performer of the week honors from CFPA as he was 20-of-27 passing for 316 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Keeton also rushed 10 times for 48 yards with another score. It was his fourth 300-yard passing game this season, and he has now thrown at least four touchdown passes in a game three times in his career.
Tennessee’s Tyler Bray and Georgia’s Aaron Murray were named national co-quarterback performers of the week by CFPA. Joining Keeton as honorable mentions were Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M), Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), Derek Carr (Fresno State), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), Matt Barkley (USC), Brett Smith (Wyoming), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), David Ash (Texas), Brett Hundley (UCLA) and Rakeem Cato (Marshall).
On the season, Keeton ranks second in the WAC and 16th in the nation in total offense (307.7 ypg), third in the WAC and 17th in the nation in passing efficiency (158.8), third in the WAC and 27th in the nation in passing (267.1 ypg), and eighth in the WAC in rushing (40.6 ypg).
Keeton is 217-of-317 passing for 2,671 yards with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In all, his 23 touchdown passes rank second at USU for a single-season, while his 217 completions rank seventh. His 68.5 completion percentage also ranks second, and he has 3,077 yards of total offense on the year to rank fifth all-time in school history for a single-season.
Utah State will have its only bye of the season this week. The Aggies play their final road game of 2012 at Louisiana Tech (8-1, 3-0 WAC) on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 5 p.m.
USU has won six of its last eight road games dating back to last season, including each of its last five.
