USU soccer: Tarver awarded WAC Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors
Utah State soccer forward Jade Tarver was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as well as America First Credit Union Utah State Athlete of the Week. This is her second WAC Offensive Player of the Week honor this season.
Tarver is also the third Aggie to be honored by the WAC this season. Senior defender Natalie Norris was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, while fellow senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford has been honored five times this year.
A sophomore from Sandy, Utah, Tarver scored the first two goals in Utah State’s 4-0 win against Louisiana Tech to capture its third-straight Western Athletic Conference regular-season title giving USU the No. 1 seed in the upcoming WAC Tournament.
The WAC Champion Aggies (11-2-6, 6-0-2 WAC) will host the WAC Tournament Nov. 1-2, 4 at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. USU will take on the winner of the match between No. 4 Louisiana Tech and No. 5 Seattle on Friday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY – Junior Kyle McKenna (Farmington, Utah) earned first-team all-WAC honors and helped Utah State to a second-place team finish as he placed second at the 2012 WAC Cross Country Championships with a time of 24:06.90.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY – Freshman Tylee Newman (Montview, Idaho) earned first-team all-WAC honors and was named the WAC’s Freshman of the Year as she helped Utah State place third at the 2012 WAC Cross Country Championships. Newman finished fifth individually at the championships with a time of 17:39.56.
FOOTBALL – Sophomore quarterback Chuckie Keeton (Houston, Texas) completed 27-of-36 passes for 340 yards with three touchdowns in leading Utah State to a 48-17 road win against UTSA last weekend. Those 27 completions are a career-high. Keeton also had one rushing yard on six carries. Overall, it was Keeton’s third career 300-yard passing game as his 340 yards Saturday rank as the second-most ever.
MEN’S GOLF – Freshman Seokwon Jeon (Salt Lake City, Utah) recorded his collegiate low 54-hole score with a 2-over 218 (72-71-75) and matched his best-ever collegiate finish as he tied for 15th place at the Cal State Northridge hosted Bill Cullum Invitational last week. Utah State finished tied for 10th place in the 20-team field with a 30-over 894 (301-299-294).
VOLLEYBALL – Senior outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) lead Utah State to a pair of home wins last week against UT Arlington (3-0) and Louisiana Tech (3-0). Against the Mavericks, White had seven kills, 13 digs and four blocks. Against the Lady Techsters, White hit a single-match school record .812 on 13 kills with no errors in 16 attacks, to go along with eight digs and one service ace. The previous school record for hitting percentage was .727 (14-0-19) set by Lori Sargent-McKnight in 1996. For the week, White hit .444 (20-4-36) and averaged 3.33 kills, 3.50 digs and 0.70 blocks per set.
