High school volleyball: Monticello earns second straight 1A title with new team

The team was led by junior outside hitter Britt Sederholm, who earned 26 kills and 15 digs. Middle hitter Audra Thurston added 10 kills and eight blocks, while libero Mady White, a sophomore, earned 25 digs. Outside Jessie Bischoff added 12 kills and 11 digs, and the numbers prove what great ball distribution the Jayhawks' setters had.

Emily Jackson finished with 22 assists and six digs, while Bailey Pacheco added 21 assists and nine digs.

As the players wiped away tears, their coach told them how much he admired the way they battled back from a two-set deficit.

"There's no quit in these girls," Franklin said. "They played their guts out."

In the last three years, the team has earned fourth, third and now second place. The natural progression indicates next year might be the Jayhawks' season — especially since they don't have a single senior on this year's second-place team.

"We've got to do it the hard way, I guess," said Franklin, as he cradles the school's first second-place volleyball trophy.
