SALT LAKE CITY — Last year the Morgan volleyball team won the 3A title in such a dominant fashion, it was not surprising when coaches picked the Trojans as the near-unanimous preseason No. 1 team this year.

Despite losing the state's best volleyball player in Bailey Farris, who overcame a serious illness to lead the Trojans to a title last year, Morgan was picked by coaches as 3A's top team in preeason polls.

Up until now, the Trojans haven't disappointed.

Morgan may have lost some players, including Farris, but the program is so solid the Trojans continued their winning ways this fall with an undefeated region season and some big nonregion wins, including a sweep of 4A's Skyline.

Morgan has benefited from consistently solid play by athletes like Katy Peterson, McKenzie Shenk, Kassidy Lish, Jorry Randall and Amanda Porter.

The defending 3A state champs will face Park City in the first round of this year's 3A tournament, which begins Friday at 8 a.m. at UVU's UCCU Center.

Last year's runner-up, Snow Canyon, finished second in Region 9 play to Deseret Hills. Interestingly, the Warriors beat the Thunder twice in the second half of the regular season.

The Thunder are led by setters Alexa Goulding and Alex Garrett and hitters Blair Bliss and Lindsay Jones. Deseret Hills, the region champion, will face Payson in the first round of Friday's tournament.

Snow Canyon will square off against Spanish Fork. The Warriors are led by Alexsa Parker, Natalie Swann and Megan Funk.

Region 10 champion Judge Memorial will take on Grantsville in the first round after navigating region play without a loss.

Regan Briesacher, Taylor Gustafson and Sydney Shafer lead a talented Bulldog squad.

Some of the better first-round games should be Hurricane vs. Delta, Uintah vs. Stansbury and Dixie vs. N. Sanpete.

Hurricane defeated Delta in a nonregion battle last week, but as any coach will tell you anything can happen in the tournament.

All matches will be streamed on www.deseretnews.com starting at 8 a.m. Friday.
