PROVO, Utah – The BYU men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against themselves and alumni Friday at the Richards Building Pool.
"It was great to compete against ourselves and the alumni tonight," head coach John Brooks said. "When it is a meet like this, it's easy to lay off but we were able to put together a lot of pretty good times. Our two fliers Jordan and David each turned in great times and breaststroker Kassy swam a great heat as well."
The meet kicked off with the women's 200 medley relay with the team of Hailey Campbell, Kassandra Bispo, Kimberly Welch Doroghian and Alexandria Sorensen taking first with a time of 1:47.40. For the men, the team of Preston Jenkins, Brady Wells, Jordan Fletcher and Brent Murray came in first with a time of 1:33.57.
Following the 200 medley relay was the 200 free. Freshman Paige Baisden touched the wall first in a time of 1:59.20, while Angela Bennion finished a close second in a time of 1:59.54. Another freshman, David Harlan, took first-place with a time of 1:46.17 and Stott Bushnell tapping in second in a time of 1:46.54.
Jessica Ampuero won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.72, and Alexandra Dodds finished in second place, touching the wall in 2:13.00. Hayden Palmer won the men's heat in a time of 1:55.77 and Andrew Rutherfurd took second in a time of 1:57.98.
In the 50 free, Taryn Toolson Lewis took first place with a time of 24.24. Sorensen finished in second with a time of 24.34 and Bispo came in third in 24.75. Fletcher and Payton Sorenson tied for first place with both tapping the wall at 21.37. David Armstrong was the third swimmer to finish, touching the wall in 21.66.
Across the deck in the diving pool, Dayna Christensen, Raleigh Williams Taylor and alumni Syrena Miskin went 1-2-3 in the 1-meter and the 3-meter. Alumni Brandon Watson won the mens 1-meter with a score of 533.20 and David Corless came in second with a score of 532.20. Corless won the 3-meter with a score of 540.30 and Edward Young came in second scoring 539.20.
Following the diving break, the swimming continued with the 100 fly. Doroghian won the women's heat in a time of 58.44 and Ampuero finished second in a time of 1:00.15. On the men's side, Fletcher won a close race in 50.41 and Armstrong finished in 50.69.
In the 100 free, the top four spots were decided by seven tenths of a second. Sorensen finished first in 54.17, Sarah Bushnell took second in 54.36, Bennion came in third in 54.56 and Dodds took fourth in 54.86. A group of alumni turned the race into a relay and took first with a time of 43.69. Jenkins was the first individual to finish in a time of 46.27 and Samuel Bates took second in a time of 48.13.
Next up was the 100 back. Campbell won the heat with a time of 57.81 and Londyn Clawson took second in a time of 59.07. Jenkins edged Shawn Western to win in a time of 54.04. Western finished in 54.41.
Alina Fong won the 500 free in a time of 5:18.84 and Camille Okelberry came in second with a time of 5:26.72. Freshman McKay Palmer finished first for the men in a time of 4:52.96 and Robert Miner took second in a time of 4:56.40.
After the break was the 100 breast. Bispo came in first place with a time of 1:04.39 and Clawson finished second with a time of 1:06.39. Wells tapped the wall first in a time of 59.41 and Hayden Palmer finished in second place with a time of 1:01.24.
The last event of the evening was the 200 free relay with the team of Campbell, Sorensen, Lewis and Andrea Grant coming in first with a time of 1:38.26. For the men's relays, the team of Murray, Fletcher, Sorenson and Garret Beaman took first place with a time of 1:24.98.
Next week the Cougars travel to Stockton, Calif., to participate in the Pacific Invitational on October 19-20.
