With three weeks remaining in the regular season and four weeks of playoffs after that, the high school prep season is technically only half over.
Undefeated region matchups
In eight of the 16 regions, there are two teams still undefeated in league play. This week is especially interesting because seven of those regions have games between those unbeaten schools. They are Hunter at Kearns (Region 2), Mountain Crest at Logan (Region 5), East at Bountiful (Region 6), Juan Diego at Wasatch (Region 10), Delta at Spanish Fork (Region 12), Duchesne at Rich (1A North) and Diamond Ranch at Monticello (1A South). Only Jordan and West Jordan from Region 3 miss out.
Looking toward the postseason, 14 teams have already secured playoff berths: Logan and Mountain Crest (Region 5); Bountiful and East (Region 6); Skyline (Region 7); Manti, Millard, South Summit and Emery (2A North); San Juan, Beaver and Grand (2A South); and Diamond Ranch and Monticello (1A South).
Fourteen more have clinched at least a tie for a tournament spot: Syracuse (Region 1); Box Elder (Region 5); Highland (Region 6); Herriman, Olympus and Westlake (Region 7); Timpview (Region 8); Hurricane (Region 9); Juan Diego and Wasatch (Region 10); Gunnison and North Summit (2A North); Richfield (2A South); and Milford (1A South).
Meanwhile, 10 teams could all be eliminated this week: American Leadership, Ben Lomond, Bonneville, Hillcrest, Murray, North Sevier, Parowan, Sky View, Tooele and Weber.
A region-by-region breakdown appears just before this week’s Golden Years installment.
Winning streaks
Duchesne hopes to pick up its 29th consecutive victory by defeating Rich. Both now share third place for the longest winning streaks in state history. Duchesne’s began over two years ago, on Sept. 3, 2010, while the Rebels attained theirs from 1994-97.
Hurricane has 20 straight wins and now ties with six others for the 16th longest all-time streak. Among current leaders, Juan Diego, San Juan, Stansbury and Syracuse, with seven victories in a row, follow Duchesne and Hurricane.
The unbeaten
Entering week eight, Class 3A still has three undefeated teams over the entire season, Hurricane, Juan Diego and Stansbury. Each of the other classifications has just a single unblemished squad: Syracuse in 5A, East in 4A, San Juan in 2A and Duchesne in 1A.
Defensive tormentors
Neither East (6-0) nor San Juan (7-0) has allowed more than a touchdown by any opponent. Not surprisingly, those two teams lead the state in victory margin (East, 40.2 points-per-game and San Juan, 31.6) as well as defense (East, 4.3 ppg and San Juan, 4.7).
Offensive powerhouses
Jordan (5-1) has scored at least five touchdowns in each of its games, while East, Dixie (6-1), Logan (6-1) and Timpview (6-1) have tallied at least four in all of their contests. The Beetdiggers lead the state in offense with 48.0 points per game, while East (44.5) and Dixie (40.3) follow.
Shout-out for shutouts
Seven teams have each blanked three foes to lead the state in shutouts this season: Box Elder, Diamond Ranch, East, Monticello, San Juan, Summit Academy and Syracuse. Box Elder’s shutouts were consecutive.
Milestone games
Logan, in its 94th season, competes for the 850th time. Only seven schools have played more games than Logan. The record is held by West, at 983 games. Pine View, celebrating its 30th season, plays its 300th game, and Desert Hills battles in its 50th contest in five years.
Among coaches, John Colosimo shoots for his 125th victory at Juan Diego.

"Mike Bowring is directing his 100th game at Manti and Blaine Monkres is coaching his 50th at Dixie"
That deserves a "come on man"
Seriously! It may be Bowering's dream but not reality.
I enjoy reading these every week. Keep up the good work. Duchesne @ Rich ought to be a battle today. Go Eagles !!
The Duchesne at Rich game was a battle, the score doesn't show what a tough game it was. McKade Nielsen added another interception to move up the career interceptions ladder, and had an insane one handed catch on a conversion. Way to go Eagles!
