Utah State football: USU fans can now vote for Kerwynn Williams for the Paul Hornung Award

The Louisville Sports Commission announced Monday that fan voting is now open for the Paul Hornung Award, which includes Utah State running back Kerwynn Williams. Fans can cast their vote for the nation’s most versatile player at the Vote for the Paul Hornung Award website.

Williams is the only player from the state of Utah and one of just three Western Athletic Conference players named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List along with San Jose State's Chandler Jones and Idaho's Justin Veltung. In all, 48 players are on the watch list.

Williams, a 5-foot-8, 189 pound senior from Las Vegas, Nev. (Valley HS,) had a career-high seven catches for a career-high 147 yards, including a career-long 74-yard touchdown reception in Utah State’s 35-13 home win against UNLV in its last outing. The 147 receiving yards for Williams is the most by an Aggie since 2002 and the most by a non-receiver since 1959.

Williams also rushed for 113 yards against the Rebels on 20 carries to become the first Utah State player to have 100-yards rushing and receiving in the same game since 2009. For Williams, it is his second-straight 100-yard rushing game and the third of his career, to go along with his first-ever 100-yard receiving game as he had a career-high 205 rushing yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns in his previous game at Colorado State, a 31-19 USU win.

On the season, Williams ranks first in the WAC and 20th in the nation in all-purpose yards (156.2 ypg), second in the WAC and 23rd in the nation in rushing (103.8 ypg), eighth in the WAC in receiving (52.4 ypg), ninth in the WAC in scoring (6.0 ppg) and ninth in the WAC in total offense (103.8 ypg).

Utah State (4-1) is off to its best start since 1978 when that team won its first five games of the year. USU has won nine of its last 11 games dating back to 2011 including each of its last five at home.

Utah State plays its third in-state opponent of the season this weekend as it travels to Provo to face BYU on Friday, Oct. 5 at 8:15 p.m., in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse

Created by the Louisville Sports Commission in 2010, the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. The award is designed to promote college football and help preserve the legacy of one of Kentucky's best-known and accomplished athletes who has always called Louisville home. Hornung, the 1956 Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame and NFL MVP for the Green Bay Packers, set a single season NFL scoring record that stood 46 years. Hornung is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame, and Vince Lombardi once called Hornung, “The most versatile man ever to play the game.” A national selection committee comprised of 16 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award, with fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse comprising the 17th vote. All votes are tabulated independently by regional accounting firm Dean Dorton Allen Ford. The winner is honored at a banquet presented by Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine.
