UVU soccer: Wolverine soccer's goalkeeper Lauren Sack is named GWC Player of the Week
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Utah Valley University goalkeeper Lauren Sack has been named the Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a strong performance in net last week. The honors were announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Houston Baptist's Taylor Gibson received Offensive honors.
Sack, a junior from Reno, Nev., had an outstanding week, keeping the Wolverines in two tough games last week. The goalkeeper, last season's GWC Defensive Player of the Year, recorded eight saves in a tough 1-0 loss to cross-town rival BYU, who is ranked No. 9 nationally. She also had three saves in a loss at Loyola Marymount. The Lions are 6-3-2 this season with a very tough schedule.
HBU's Gibson, a sophomore from British Columbia, continued her torrid pace by scoring the game's first two goals, the first being the game-winner, in a 6-0 victory over Texas Southern last Friday night. The midfielder's first goal found the lower right corner of the net after a centering pass, while her second goal started the Huskies' offense, as HBU scored the next three goals in just eight minutes. Gibson now has seven points in the last three matches (3g, 1a) and is second on the team with four goals and nine points on the season.
Also nominated were Delaware State's forward Taylor Addison and goalie Mekayla McAdoo, Houston Baptist's defensemen Cindy Hedden and Utah Valley's forward Regan Benson.
