Crews work to rescue base jumper dangling on Provo Canyon cliff

PROVO — Rescue teams were working Monday night to retrieve a base jumper whose parachute had snagged on a cliff face near the mouth of Provo Canyon.

Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said crews were trying to determine whether to approach the man from above or below and how to get to him before the parachute gives way. 

"It's going to be a technical effort to get him out," Cannon said. "The real risk here isn't because of the injuries. The real risk is if what's holding him now gives way, it could be a real dangerous outcome." 

The man appears to have injured an ankle in the fall, though police don't know the extent of the injury. Rescue operations were being staged from Timpanogos Park. 

The cliff is about 1,000 feet high, Cannon estimated.  

Police got the call about 7:45 p.m. from someone who was nearby when the man jumped. It was unclear whether the caller was with the man or just saw him jump.
