USU tennis: Utah State men’s tennis opens fall season at Weber State Invitational
Utah State men’s tennis opened its fall season Friday at the Weber State Invitational.
After the first day of play, senior Sven Poslusny remains on the main draw bracket, while junior Brandon Nielsen remains in the consolation bracket of singles play.
In singles action, Utah State sophomore Matt Sweet defeated Krzystof Stempien of Idaho State (6-3, 7-6), while Curran Wearmouth defeated ISU's Nate Gross (6-4, 6-3) in the first round. Poslusny advanced to the second round on a bye where he defeated fellow Aggie Sweet (6-2, 6-2). Wearmouth fell to Oliver Good of Weber State in three sets (6-0, 4,6, 6-3). Brandon Nielsen lost in the first round to Sanjay Goswami of Weber State (6-0, 6-1).
Junior Matt Thatcher defeated Giorgi Kvernadeze of Weber State (6-2, 6-2) in the first round and then fell to Austin Miller of Idaho State in the second round (6-2, 6-2). Sophomore Tanner Dance took down Dylan Hansel of Weber State in the first round and then fell to Ryan Garner of Weber State (6-3, 6-2). Freshman Zeno Kastelic and junior Andrew Whiting both advanced to the second round on byes. Kastelic was then beaten by Weber State's Ben Rode (6-0, 3-6, 6-2). and Whiting was taken down by Andres Coello of Idaho State (6-1, 6-1).
In the singles play consolation bracket Wearmouth was defeated in the first round by Gross (6-2, 7-6). Nielsen advanced to the second round on a bye and then advanced to the championship by default against Caio Poitena of Weber State.
In doubles play, Nielsen and Thatcher took down Trabert and Hansel of Weber State (8-3) advancing to the second round where they were defeated by Miller and Swiggert of Idaho State (8-2). Poslusny and Frederick Peterson advanced to the second round on a bye where they were taken down by Fought and Goswani of Weber State (9-7). Wearmouth and Kastelic also advanced to the second round on a bye where they were eliminated by Garner and Rode of Weber State (9-8, [7-5]). Sweet and Whiting fell to Norman and Gross of Idaho State on the first round (8-5).
The Aggie men will continue competition on Saturday in singles play and in doubles and singles consolation brackets.
