BYU opens this season Thursday night against Washington State. Coach Bronco Mendenhall spoke to boosters at the annual Big Blue Bash over the weekend and has a good attitude after being heckled.

Mendenhall talked about winning a national championship, the big picture of BYU football, the broadcasting deal with ESPN and a newly released book about his coaching philosophy. He also shared a recent experience his team had with Elder David A. Bednar, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Washington State coach Mike Leach isn't saying definitely which quarterback will start on Thursday. One longtime WSU football observer is glad that Leach makes Washington State "relevant" again.

ESPN.com chronicles Riley Nelson's path from backup quarterback to starter.
