USU football: Utah State football hits midway point of fall camp
Utah State head football coach Gary Andersen ran his team through its 12th practice of fall camp Tuesday morning on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium in preparation for its second scrimmage, which will be held Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to enter Romney Stadium via the south gates due to the construction of the new strength and conditioning center on the northwest side of the stadium.
“It was a good morning,” said Andersen of Tuesday’s practice. “We had a special teams scrimmage early on, which was a positive, and we are obviously building toward tomorrow night. Moving this scrimmage to Wednesday is just the best time physically for the kids and that’s why we changed the schedule.”
Andersen said he expects to see progress from the first scrimmage.
“At the end, when we walk away from it, we want to be able to see an offense or a defense when positive things happen to them, and you want it because of execution and technique, not because of a mistake from the offense or defense," Andersen said. That’s important for this scrimmage and I expect to see that progress from the last scrimmage for sure."
Sophomore quarterback Chuckie Keeton agreed with coach Andersen on the importance of Wednesday’s scrimmage.
“I’m looking for tempo,” Keeton said. “We want to pride ourselves this year on being a big tempo team and that means getting the defense tired and being able to take advantage of that, and we have to make plays in order for that to happen.”
On the other side of the ball, redshirt sophomore safety Brian Suite likes what he has seen from the Aggie defense and expects continued improvement.
“Everyone is really starting to settle into their positions,” Suite said. “We have really good pressure right now by the defensive front and outside linebackers. We need that to continue and we need to continue to play well in the secondary. Coach Andersen is really trying to get all of us to master our positions and know the ins and outs of everything that we need to do. We’re just getting ready to get the final scrimmage in tomorrow and polish everything up.”
Utah State, which is in its second week of fall camp, will practice Wednesday morning from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on the practice fields before its scrimmage Wednesday night. On Thursday, USU will practice from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m., also on the practice fields before returning to its normal two-a-day schedule Friday.
Utah State will conclude its second week of fall camp with a situational scrimmage as part of Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey’s, on Saturday, Aug. 18 beginning at 2 p.m.
All practices during fall camp, which concludes on Saturday, Aug. 25, are open to the public.
For the first time since 1996, the Aggies will open a season with back-to-back home games, hosting a pair of in-state foes in Southern Utah on Thursday, Aug. 30 and Utah on Friday, Sept. 7. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. (MT) starts from Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. The Aggies' game against Utah will be on ESPN2.
