OGDEN — Four family members, including three children, were able to escape their burning house without injury Wednesday thanks to a smoke detector.
Just before 12:30 a.m., a homeowner at 2802 Jackson Ave. heard a smoke detector going off and went outside to find the garage on fire, according to Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Matt Schwenk.
The man got the three children out of the house safely.
The fire spread from the garage to the interior of the home. When fire crews arrived, the garage was fully involved, Schwenk said. The fire was brought under control about 1:40 a.m. Damage was estimated at $130,000.
Investigators believe the fire started inside the garage, but had not determined an exact cause as of Wednesday. The fire was not considered suspicious. There were no vehicles in the garage when it burned.
