LONDON — Becky Holliday, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be competing in the women's pole vault final on Monday as the Olympic competitions continue in London.
The 32-year-old competing for the United States cleared the 4.55 meter (or almost 15 feet) bar to qualify for the final. She is 10th going into the finals.
Also competing today in track and field events are two Mormon shot putters: New Zealand's Valerie Adams, who won gold in 2008 in Beijing; and Jillian Camarena-Williams, of California and competing for the United States, who took the nation's indoor championship last year and took bronze in the 2011 world championships. Both the preliminary and finals are today.
Other Mormons who competed in London this weekend:
Sarah Robles, 24, lifted a personal best of 145 kilograms (about 320 pounds) during the clean and jerk portion of the women's plus 75-gram weightlifting competition this weekend. Robles, from Desert Hot Springs, Calif., lifted 120 kilograms (about 265 pounds) during the snatch portion.
Her combined total of 265 kilograms put her in seventh place. The gold and silver medalists set world and Olympic records during different portions of the competition.
The U.S. women's team beat Italy 9-6 in the quarterfinal game this weekend. The team will play Australia on Tuesday in the semifinal. The winner of the semifinal game goes on to compete for gold while the loser will compete for bronze.
Mormon Tumua Anae is the backup goalkeeper on the U.S. women's team.
The U.S. beach volleyball tandem of Jake Gibb, who is LDS, and Sean Rosenthal beat a duo from Russia on Saturday and will advance to the quarterfinals. The Americans won the first two sets in the match.
Gibb, a Bountiful native and University of Utah alumnus, and Rosenthal are set to face a pair from Latvia on Monday in the quarterfinal round. The winner goes on to play in the semifinal.
Mary Killman, who is LDS, and Mariya Koroleva performed the technical routine in the synchronize swimming duet competition this weekend and were ranked 10th. The free routines are scheduled for Monday. Then the scores from both routines will be added together and the top 12 duets will compete in Tuesday's finals.
The U.S. men's team, including Mormon returned missionaries and Brigham Young University alumni Russell Holmes, a middle blocker, and libero Rich Lambourne, lost to Russia 3 sets to 2 sets on Saturday in the preliminary round match as each team fought for points. Two of the sets went into the volleyball equivalent of overtime for the winner to take a two-point lead.
Their next match is against Tunisia on Monday in the last preliminary round game.
The 12 teams are divided into two pools and all of the teams play each one in their pool during the preliminary round. The top four from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals and a shot at the medals podium.
Track and field
Nooa Takooa, of Kiribati, had a personal best time of 11.53 seconds in the men's 100-meter preliminary on Saturday. The 19-year-old did not advance to the next round.
While Breeja Larson helped the 4x100-meter medley relay team make it to the finals, all four of the swimmers from the qualifying round were substituted for the final. The quartet that swam in the final took the gold medal.
Holliday will compete in the pole vault final and Adams and Camarena-Williams face off in shot put. The U.S. men's volleyball team plays Tunisia in the last game of the preliminary round and Gibb and Rosenthal face a Latvian team in beach volleyball's quarterfinals.
Also, Killman and Koroleva dive in for their duet's free routine in synchronized swimming.
