Woman indicted in killing of Monument Valley tour guide

HALCHITA, San Juan County — A Monument Valley woman faces a murder charge in connection with the death of a San Juan County photographer and tour guide.

A federal indictment unsealed this week charges Michelle Davida Harvey, 28, with second-degree murder and discharging a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The indictment alleges Harvey killed Carlos Peney Mose during an "incident" in Halchita on Jan. 28, 2012. Mose was pronounced dead at the Kayenta, Ariz., Medical Clinic later that day. Federal prosecutors allege Harvey used a .22-caliber handgun but provided no details about what happened.

Harvey was arrested last week in Oljato-Monument Valley and arraigned in U.S. District Court on Monday. She is a member of the Navajo Nation, as was Mose.

Mose, 35, grew up in Mexican Hat and attended Monument Valley High School. He graduated from Fort Louis College in Colorado with a degree in Indian studies, according to his obituary in the San Juan Record. He worked as photographer and tour guide in Mexican Hat where he also played the flute and performed songs from pow-wows for visitors.
