USU football: Jake Doughty announced as candidate for 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
Utah State football player Jake Doughty is a candidate for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) today announced the candidate list with 117 student-athletes on it. As one of college football’s most prestigious off-the-field honors, the award recognizes a select group of college football players committed to making a difference in their communities.
Doughty, a native of Draper, Utah (Juan Diego HS), is a two-year letterwinner at linebacker for the Aggies and is entering his junior year. He has worked his way up from seeing action mainly on special teams as a freshman to now starting at linebacker entering this fall. Doughty played in all 13 games of Utah State’s 2011 season that ended in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, USU’s first bowl appearance since 1997. He posted 26 total tackles (12 solo, 14 assists) with three tackles for loss. Doughty's top outing of last season was five tackles, which he posted in a home game against Wyoming and at Hawai’i, while adding three stops in the Nevada game.
Off the field, Doughty has a 3.372 GPA majoring in mechanical engineering, earning academic all-Western Athletic Conference honors in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Utah State Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Scholar-Athlete Award in the 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
He is a member of the USU Student-Athlete Mentor program, a group that offers experiences and knowledge to new student-athletes in the hope it will improve their quality of life.
Of the 117 players, 52 are from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Doughty is the lone WAC player on the list and one of three players from the state of Utah, joining Utah's Sean Sellwood and BYU's Michael Alisa.
From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select two 11-player Good Works Teams® – one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September.
Allstate and the AFCA will launch the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® website on ESPN.com featuring profiles and images of the final team members, as well as the opportunity for fans to vote for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® captain.
Utah State will return 48 letterwinners (20 offense, 22 defense, six special teams) from the Aggies' 2011 season in which USU posted a 7-6 record, its first seven-win season since 1993. Five of USU's losses were by one score or less, and 10 of the Aggies' games were decided by one score, which were the most in the nation.
For the first time since 1996, the Aggies will open a season with back-to-back home games, hosting Southern Utah on Thursday, Aug. 30 and Utah on Friday, Sept. 7. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. (MT) starts from Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. The Aggies' game against Utah will be on ESPN2. It will be the 110th meeting between USU and Utah, resuming the rivalry after a two-year hiatus.
