Utah State men's golf: Tanner Higham sits in second place after Day 1 of WAC championships

LAS VEGAS — Sophomore Tanner Higham shot an opening round 4-under-par 68 and is in second place individually to lead Utah State at the 2012 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference men’s golf championships held here at the Rio Secco Golf Club Monday.

Utah State is currently in fifth place after the first day of competition with a 6-over 294, while Fresno State and Idaho are tied for the lead after both teams shot a 1-under 287. San Jose State is in third place with a 2-over 290. Four-time defending WAC champion New Mexico State is in fourth place with a 5-over 293, followed by Utah State (294), Nevada (301), Hawaii (304) and Louisiana Tech (304).

Idaho's Sean McMullen carded the best score of the day with a 7-under par 65 to lead by three strokes over USU’s Higham. In all, eight players shot under par during the first round.

Higham (Layton) shot a 3-under 33 on the front nine with three birdies and no bogeys, and then had two birdies and one bogey on the back nine for his 4-under 68.

Freshman Tanner Jenson (Parker, Colo.) carded an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth, while freshman Andrew Paulson (Sandy) finished with a 3-over 75 and is tied for 20th.

Senior Chanse Godderidge (Smithfield) is currently tied for 30th with a 7-over 79, and freshman Brennan Coburn (Layton) is 33rd with an 8-over 80.

The 54-hole tournament will continue on Tuesday with the second round beginning at 8 a.m. MT. On Tuesday, USU golfers will be grouped with players from Nevada with tee times starting at 8:40 MT. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday.
