UVU softball: Tiffany Mills one-hits N.C. A&T as UVU rolls to 11-0 win
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tiffany Mills pitched a one-hit shutout as Utah Valley University cruised to an 11-0 victory over North Carolina A&T in the final day of the N.C. A&T Invitational on Sunday. With the win the Wolverines (6-4) were named tournament champions by going 3-1 for the weekend.
"In a game with a lot of different people having success, Tiffany (Mills) clearly rose above the rest with a dominating performance. She completely controlled the game today," said UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said of Sunday's win. "Overall I'm very happy with how the girls came out and played. It was just a great job all the way around."
Mills pitched the distance for the third time in as many starts at the invite for the Wolverines and allowed just one infield single in the contest. She completely shut down the Aggie offense by facing just three batters over the minimum in the five-inning shutout. The UVU junior also struck out four and walked just one in the complete-game gem.
Offensively Robinson led the way again as the sophomore went 2 for 3 with a triple and a single. She also added three RBIs and two runs scored. In four games this weekend Robinson hit an unheard of .714 (10 for 14) from the plate with 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored. At the invite Robinson hit three home runs, two doubles and a triple.
Uresti also had another good day from the leadoff spot for Utah Valley to earn all-tournament honors, as well. The freshman went a perfect 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI. For the tournament Uresti hit .556 (5 for 9) with nine runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles, a homer and four walks.
UVU started the rout early on by scoring three runs in the top of the first. Uresti and Marie Williams started things off with back-to-back singles and Robinson drove them both home with a triple to right. Robinson later came around to score on a passed ball.
The Wolverines didn't stop there as they scored a run in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth. Amanda Perez drove home two of those runs with two RBI doubles. Uresti, Robinson, Breanna English, Maddy Schulz and Kylee Brinkerhoff all also drove in runs for UVU during the middle innings.
Rayven Smith was N.C. A&T's lone batter to get a hit off of Mills in the contest as she hit an infield single to second base in the second inning. In all just four runners reached base for the Aggies.
Behind Robinson and Uresti on Sunday, Perez went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Brinkerhoff, Schulz and Krystin Jachim also each recorded two hits apiece as all finished 2 for 3.
The Wolverines will now be off until March 9 when they will travel to Kissimmee, Fla., to play 10 games at the Rebel Spring Games.
