Salt Lake police reportedly found 15.8 grams of cocaine and 42.8 grams of marijuana in the vehicle of a Salt Lake man charged Friday with attempted criminal homicide.
Police say DeMelvin Lavel Robinson, 26, pulled up to a 7-Eleven, 501 E. 2100 South, at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and sat in his car while talking to another man in his 20s. The conversation reportedly turned into an argument when the man left Robinson to make a call at a nearby pay phone.
Robinson is accused of driving up to the man and firing several shots at him, according to a 3rd District Court document. Two bullets hit the man, who was treated at a local hospital for wounds to his arm and leg. Police found one bullet lodged in a phone book at the pay phone.
Witnesses obtained the license number of the vehicle as it drove away. A short time later, police found and chased the vehicle at a high rate of speed and, at one point, down the wrong way of a one-way street. While the car was still in gear, the driver jumped out at 1200 S. Emery (1170 West) and a pursuit continued on foot. A round was located in the gun that police believe was used in the shooting.
Robinson also faces felony charges for drug possession and eluding police.
