LaVell Edwards career ending in praise, fanfare

PROVO — He arrived to virtually no fanfare 28 years ago; he will leave to fireworks and a coin-toss ceremony and a visit from the president of his church and the ovation of some 65,000 fans. LaVell Edwards won't leave as quietly as he came.

When BYU picked him as its next head coach all those years ago, administrators didn't bother calling a press conference to make the announcement, or if they did no one remembers it, including Edwards himself. The school simply dispatched an announcement to the media. By the way, we've hired a new coach. . . .

On Jan. 28, 1972, the Deseret News reported — under the headline BYU NAMES EDWARDS COACH — "LaVell Edwards, a veteran of 10 years as an assistant coach at BYU, today was named head coach of the Cougars. Edwards, who was chief assistant to Tommy Hudspeth for the past three years, was chosen to succeed Hudspeth, who resigned last Saturday."
