COLTON SHAVER, Jordan, baseball: A week into the season and Colton Shaver has picked up right where he left off.

Jordan has only played two games thus far, but already Shaver has three doubles and a home run in wins over Taylorsville and American Fork.

A Deseret News first teamer both his sophomore and junior year, this senior catcher seems well on his way to a career year before taking his talents to BYU.

As a junior last season, Shaver batted .542 with nine home runs, eight doubles and a 1.028 slugging percentage. The year before he batted .400 with four homers and 10 doubles.

"Led by returning all-state catcher Colton Shaver, we have an excellent chance at having a great season," said Jordan coach Chad Fife.

PerfectGame.org has included Shaver on its 2014 preseason third-team all-American team and its West Region first team.

ASHLEE MURRAY, Mountain Crest, softball: When this junior doesn't have a game on the schedule with the Mountain Crest Mustangs, she finds one with anybody willing to put her on the field.

"She's the equivalent of a softball gym rat," said head coach Mike Anderson. "She will practice any time; and she will definitely play any time."

The junior third baseman and pitcher had 77 opportunities last season and made just two fielding errors. This season she's off to a phenomenal start with three grand slams in a week. Just as dedicated in the classroom, Murray's skill in the field and mental toughness are key to the Mustangs' early season success.

"She's very cool-headed — quick reflexes and she stays calm under pressure," Anderson said. "She is a great teammate. She is a kid who is always about her team, builds her teammates up, and she has a fun personality."
