The July 11 Deseret News editorial, "Lessons from Quebec," missed an important point — rail and pipelines are both very safe ways to move oil.
Railroads have a strong safety record for moving hazardous materials, including crude oil which they have been handling for 150 years. Today 99.997 percent of all rail hazmat shipments reach their destination without a release caused by a train accident.
This record is due to a strict adherence to safety rules and regulations, as well as continual private investment by freight railroads in network infrastructure and equipment — more than $25 billion in 2012 alone.
The editorial was right in its statement about oil produced in Canada being moved, but I believe pipelines and railroads will share the responsibility of moving oil to market. As new domestic energy supplies develop, freight railroads are prepared to safely, efficiently and reliably meet customer needs today and into the future.
