Letters: Teachers not to blame

The new math Common Core has certainly taken its toll on education. Although it is frustrating for parents to have very few resources to help their children through this struggle, the teachers are suffering just as much. Teachers currently have very limited resources. The Davis School District provides no answer keys or test materials whatsoever, so many teachers put in long hours after school each day to write and solve each problem they teach with. I have often seen them work eight-hour days (including an hour or more for preparation) and then work more hours at night just preparing for the next day's lesson.

Simply put, this struggle is something everyone must work through together. No individual person is at fault because this is a time of transition. Parents and children are hurting, but blame is not to be placed on teachers — they are just as unfamiliar with the curriculum as everyone else.
