College roundup: Shepherd comes off bench to provide clutch hit for Y.
The Cougars (19-15, 7-5 West Coast Conference) had production from multiple players coming off the bench to take the series.
Collin Braithwaite led off with a single to left field to start the rally. Adam Law drew his second walk to put runners at first and second base. In his fourth at bat of the season, Shepherd smashed an 0-2 double to the wall in left-center to score Braithwaite and Law for the decisive runs.
UTAH: At Corvallis Ore., a four-run fifth inning helped lift sixth-ranked Oregon State to an 8-3 win over the Utes. Utah was paced at the plate by TJ Bennett, who went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI.
UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY: At Orem, the Wolverines jumped out to an early lead but Houston Baptist University came back to earn a split of the four-game Great West Conference series with a 4-3 win in Saturday's finale at Brent Brown Ballpark.
BYU: At Stanford, Calif., in its final regular-season match, the No. 1 BYU men's volleyball team swept No. 8 Stanford (30-28, 25-18, 25-21) on the road Saturday. The Cougars finish the regular season 21-4 overall and 20-3 in the MPSF, claiming the MPSF regular season title by three matches. Freshman Ben Patch led the attack with 14 kills, with seven coming in the first set, and added six digs. Juniors Devin Young and Taylor Sander joined Patch in double figures with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
UTAH: At Corvallis Ore., sophomore left fielder Kate Dickman tied Utah's single-game record with seven RBIs, and had a pair of homers, to lead the University of Utah softball team to its first-ever Pac-12 Conference road victory on Saturday at Oregon State.
BYU: At Provo, senior pitcher Hannah Howell threw a perfect game in an 11-0 win over Loyola Marymount in the second game of a doubleheader. She also led the Cougars to a 9-4 victory in the first game.
UTAH STATE: At Seattle, the Aggies lost to Seattle, 8-0, in five innings Saturday. Sophomore third baseman Nicole Arata led USU at the plate with a 2-for-2 outing with a double.
WEBER STATE: At Sacramento, Calif., the Wildcats put the finishing touches on an epic 15 inning victory over Sacramento State. The Wildcats clinched the 6-4 victory in the bottom of the 15th inning of a game that started at 4:15 p.m. on Friday before it was eventually suspended due to darkness. The game ultimately lasted four hours, 39 minutes.
BYU MEN: At Spokane, Wash., after playing three matches in three days, the No. 39 BYU men's tennis team came away with three wins as they topped Gonzaga 7-0 for the last win on Saturday at the Spokane Racquet Club.
BYU WOMEN: At Provo, for the second time this week, the BYU women's tennis team earned a win at home, this time defeating Gonzaga 4-3 on at the outdoor tennis courts.
Track and field
BYU: At Sacramento, Calif., Competition at the Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Invitational wrapped up on Saturday with BYU grabbing nine top-five finishes in nine separate events. BYU's 4x100-meter relay team took third place with a time of 41.65. The 4x400-meter relay team took second in the event with a time of 3:18.66.
UTAH STATE: At Sacramento, Calif., Utah State's men and women's track & field teams had four student-athletes win gold in their respective events at Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major Challenge. The USU men tallied 127 points to place second as a team, while the Aggie women ended the day with a fourth-place team finish with 96.5 points. Overall, Utah State had 33 top-six finishes during the three-day meet.
UTAH WOMEN: At Ogden, the Utes had another solid outing at the Weber State Wildcat Invitational. Junior Destanae Howerton-Davis broke her second school record in two days and won the discus throw. She broke her own record in the shot put with a mark of 166-10 feet breaking her lifetime-best by a foot.
